The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The group's name was derived from the Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back was a complete failure, but they rebound with their fourth album Isolation which contains two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour makes them a household name throughout the globe.
After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It marks a step away from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. This album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
During the recording of the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to record a new album and change their name an alternative producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a major tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
