The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas and doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. The company believed that North America as a growth market for Washlet's bidets and toilets, in contrast to its "base" markets of Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure that the future generations could read them. Many words were substituted with foreign words. For instance, dui, which is Bengali for verandah was being used.
Origins
Incorporated in 1917, Toto's beginnings mirrored Japan's development. In the first half of its existence, the company produced goods to meet demand for modern and contemporary urban housing. To accomplish this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the nation to produce ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered automation for production control, which allows for greater efficiency and a more consistent production.
The company began expanding internationally in the late 1980s in order to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company established the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other products of other manufacturers in order to enhance its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm’s global market share.
By the 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus to research and development of household appliances that are water-related. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and to increase profits. Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features a strong, eco-friendly tornado flush. The company uses recycled water for its manufacturing process, and has a green purchasing policy. Toto also produces bathtubs, faucets, and hand dryers with greater energy efficiency than typical models.
The first museum of the company opened in the year 2015, and it has exhibitions about Toto's iconic products and their development as well as its group companies (all that deal with ceramics) and the history of plumbing and other products like bath units, and in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum also has a bathroom that includes a WASHLET toilet and other toilet-related innovations.
Before the formation of Toto members of the group did session work for various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all played on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
With a name as evocative as Asia one would think that the group would be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a fairly simple rock band. The group was formed as four members and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a diverse musical background, their biggest success was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a huge blockbuster, however it did not come without its own set of issues. The record companies placed Toto under pressure to release the top single or they would rescind them. Luckily for Toto they delivered with the assistance of the smash single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experiences. Before joining the group, the band members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for '80s pop, influencing many contemporary artists.
The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly get their hooks into your mind. The album also includes some jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and distorted AOR which could appear completely unnatural, but actually works very well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes took a turn for the worse. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band went through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as popular as IV. However, the band still managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums and was a more powerful, constant effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its edgier sound was indicative of the maturation of group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on previous efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the group embarked on an extensive world tour in support of the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old tapes and demos for a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the band's first album without a single song titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia, met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be revived. This lineup, minus Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
